BIKING TO GUITARRERO CAVE

It is an MBT itinerary in the Cordillera Negra, located to the west of the Cordillera Blanca, it is formed by slightly lower peaks. Due to its lower elevation and because it receives less precipitation, it is not covered in snow, which explains its name. It is an ideal balcony to appreciate the snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera Blanca along the Santa River. We cross cultivated fields and fertile lands of the valley. We appreciate in the result the microclimate that we fear. At the end of the itinerary we visit the Guitarrero Cave, a vestige of the first horticulturists dating from 8,500 to 11,000 years.

Detailed itinerary:

Carhuaz 2650 m – Maya 2600 m – Ataquero 2700 – Shupluy 2550 – Guitarrero Cave 2600 m – Mancos 2500.

We begin the itinerary in Plaza de Carhuaz. Then we headed to the town of Maya, the first producer of avocados in Carhuaz. Then we ascend for half an hour along a carriage trail to descend along a panoramic path to the Tinco valley with the

snow-capped mountains of Huascarán and Hualcán to the east. We arrived at the Bridge that one Tinco and Ataquero in the middle of fruit trees from Peaches, avocados and surprisingly mangoes with bananas. Always on the left bank of the Santa River we continue our MTB route. We pass the slopes of Ataquero with its immense fields of Tuna, a highly appreciated fruit that at the time was the first producer of "Cochineal" (insect/parasite that lives in the tuna that has a natural dye to make lipstick). We continue and pass through Shupluy to continue always on the edge of the river between scattered trees of huarangos.

We arrived at the Guitarreros Cave: It was discovered for science by the American archaeologist Thomas Lynch. It contains the vestiges of one of the oldest human settlements in Peru, dating back to the 12th millennium BC. C. (around 11,000 BC, lithic period). The presence of many plants was also detected, including some domestic ones, such as beans, whose antiquity was established at approximately 8500 BC, which made Guitarrero's man the first incipient horticulturist or farmer in Peru and America in general.

After lunch, we finish with an optional bath in a nearby hot spring. Then we continue along a narrow path between the vegetation of ababes and huarangos. You have to load the bikes some sections. We descend to some more impressive suspension bridges and cross Mancos. The vehicle recovers us and we return to Carhuaz.
