TREK “PATH OF THE GODS"
Unlike the classic treks of the Cordillera Blanca with their respective intersecting valleys, this type of alpine itinerary or Alta Vía allows you to enjoy the view of the Callejón de Huaylas, gradually reaching the Don Bosco Huascarán Refuge above 4700 m. Stay overnight with all the comforts and feel like you are at the foot of the highest mountain in Peru. Rugged terrain everyday makes this trekking the most intense of the common routes. With 80% of unmarked wild trails, passing under walls of more than a thousand meters such as the Huascarán Norte, Huandoy and the impossible Peak of the 60s: the Chacraraju. Overnight in mountain refuges such as Refugio Perú, Refugio Huaripampa and Contrahierbas. We will cross communities of farmers and ranchers observing their daily life. We will visit the Contrahierbas Refuge next to the archaeological remains of Quishuar, which was a ceremonial center to venerate the tutelary Gods of the Andean world: Huascarán, Chopicalqui, Chacaraju. We finish via the Ulta valley with its two Yanayacu passes with frequent visible condors and the wildest pass of the Chequiaraju at 5080 meters with the view of the snow-capped Ulta, the most rugged in the valley.

We set off on an MBT bike towards the Cordillera Negra, located to the west of the Cordillera Blanca, it is made up of somewhat lower peaks. Due to its lower elevation and because it receives less precipitation, it is not covered in snow, which explains its name. It is an ideal location to appreciate the snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera Blanca along the Santa River. We cross cultivated fields and fertile lands of the valley, appreciating the results of the microclimate that we have. At the end of the itinerary we visit the Guitarrero Cave, a vestige of the first horticulturists dating from 8,500 to 11,000 years.

Some scattered forests of quenuales (Polylepis) and a last slope leads us to the first lake, Laguna Cocchca. We leave early in the morning in a private vehicle in the direction of Carhuaz, then we go up to the town of Shilla. Always with our vehicle we reach the community of Huaypan at 3500 m, with its terraces of potatoes and wheat. After a eucalyptus forest we start the path of the Huascarán refuge. Always ascending to the flank and the dominant view towards the valley, the Cordillera Negra being the most important. The cities of Huaraz, Mancos, and Yungay become visible in the landscape. After reaching a rocky promontory, the Huascarán refuge remains 1 hour away. Settle into the shelter.

We enjoy the sunset and sunrise from the highest refuge in Peru. Early in the morning we begin the descent cautiously along the normal expedition route. Between the rocks down the road we arrive at the base camp. In some sections, due to the presence of frozen streams, we will use the rope. From base camp we start a new trail that passes through the traces of the fateful 1970 avalanche of 50 million cubic meters that buried the old city of Yungay. At the lowest point it is a warm micro climate requiring you to make your way through a forest of trees. After crossing this terrain we approach the Huascarán Park gateway. After this arduous stage, a private taxi brings us to the Yuraccorral 3870 m, the Camp.
Optional: Those who wish can continue on foot through the valley to Yuraccorral.

Note: Consult our EXPE PERU team about the Variant of the North Wall of the Huascarán.
From Yuraccoral we go back to the monument of the fallen. Our trail continues through the rock slide. Though dry, it becomes steep between the grass and the quenuales trees. Our reference is Huandoy Sur and its wall inclined at more than 90 degrees. Famous for having been climbed after 9 attempts, the French Rene Demaison was the first to achieve this wall. As we ascend, we better appreciate the north walls of Huascaran with its 2,000-meter wall, the scene of Renato Casarotto's 18-day solo climb. Then we reach the highest point in the moraine at 4800 m, we make a journey to the east, after a rocky ridge we see the Peru refuge at 4680 m.
7H 930m/ -120m
Night in shelter. Meals included.
We have a well-deserved rest at the refuge and a refreshing breakfast. We leave the refuge in the direction of the southern moraine of Pisco, passing by a lake formation. With some zig zag we access the first pass at 4800 meters. There is the option to continue up to a rocky ridge of 5000 m to observe in its splendor the Chacraraju of 6108 m and its fascinating west wall of more than 1,200 meters. Then descend to Laguna 69 with its very popular turquoise colors. We continue our way, leaving this popular and classic lake and then fork to Broggi, an old camp.

The most awaited day. We leave early to the east along a moraine towards our 4950 m Broggi pass, to appreciate the Chacraraju. Behind us we appreciate the Broggi lakes and the remains of the Broggi glacier, one of the first to disappear. The view is dominated by Chacraraju (the Impossible Peak from the 60s-70s) and its rocky ridge, first climbed by Lioney Terray. Careful descent through rocky areas and grass towards the Ticllacocha lakes in the Ranincuray valley. Through the same valley to the Huaripampa camp 3700 m.

We start the first day of contact with the locals, their fields of crops, potatoes, tarwi, quinoa. The children approach us in the town of Huaripampa (part of the Santa Cruz – Vaquería trekking). From Colcabamba 3400 m along a road we gradually arrive at Chalhua 3500 m. A new glacier, the Contrahierbas 6000m, comes into view. We pass close to Yanama, a picturesque town on the eastern slope of the mountain range. From Yanama 3400 m we have views of the snow-capped Chacraraju, Pyramid. Chopicalqui, Paria, Taulliraju. We ascend towards the Contrahierbas refuge. After settling in we visit the Quisuar archaeological complex at 4100 m.

From the Contrahierbas refuge we take an old path that has been restored and recovered. We arrive by descending to a channel that leads us to the Ichic Ulta valley, then we return to the normal path. We continue along a path through a forest of quenuales (polylepis), a typical tree of the Cordillera Blanca, appreciating the Contrahierbas glacier with continuous seracs to the Ichic Ulta lake. By noon we arrive at Mirador 4550 m in front of the Contrahierbas glacier.

Today we have to do the highest pass of all alpine trekking, the Chequiaraju pass 5080 m. From the Ulta grasslands we ascend along a very well marked path to Laguna Huallcacocha 4300 m. We pass another forest of quenuales in the middle. We continue along the southern crest of the lake, already looking for a path through the vegetation. Always using the eastern crest of the Chequiaraju as a reference, we arrive at its moraine. A steep section of granite rock leads us to the Chequiaraju Pass 5080 meters. Hualcán 6120 awaits us with its north face, plus the Auquiscocha lakes. The Huascarán with its southern slope like the Chopicalqui. But the most impressive is Nevado Ulta 5800, the steepest in the Cordillera Blanca. We cross the short glacier and settle on the moraine.
