Trek to Contrahierbas Hut
The Contrahierbas hut is a mountain lodge located on the slopes of the snowy Cajavilca, belonging to the Contrahierbas massif at 4,100 meters above sea level, on the border of the Huascarán National Park, department of Áncash, Peru. It has a capacity of 70 beds and is the starting point. Departure to ascend to the Cajavilca peak and visit pre-Columbian ruins. It is part of the group of 5 shelters built by the Peruvian and Italian volunteers of Operation Mato Grosso within the Don Bosco program in the Andes headed by the Italian priest Ugo de Censi. In its construction, the architectural techniques of alpine refuges and the pre-Columbian technique of Huanca Pachilla (embedding small stones in the fissures of the walls) were used.

Summary Itinerary
Day 1: Carhuaz 2650 m (Huaraz)- Chacas 3400 m – Pupash 4000 - trek Refugio Contrahierbas 4100 m.
We leave at 5am towards the Ulta ravine with private mobility. Ascent to the Punta Olímpica pass 4767 m, impressive view of Huascarán 6768 m east and Chopicalqui 6350 m. It is the highest point of the trip, we start the slope of the
Marañón. Arrival at Chacas 3400. Continental breakfast included and visit of the colonial altarpiece. We continue the trip to Acochaca and begin the ascent to the Tapush pass 4000 m, where a spectacular view of the Chacraraju awaits us and if the weather allows it, we can appreciate the Alpamayo. We leave our vehicle and start walking for approximately 2 hours. A welcome tea at the refuge then we settled in. After a rest we visit the replica of the archaeological center of Quisuar that corresponds to the Conchucos culture. Dinner at the Refuge.

Day 2: Refuge Contrahierbas 4100 m - Chalhua 3400 m - Carhuaz
From the Contrahierbas Refuge, after a good breakfast, we headed towards the Molinopampa valley 3500 m along a well-marked path. We take the pre-Inca trail passing through the ancient Quisuar archaeological monument, then some pine forests and native alder trees lead us to the bottom of the valley that joins the town of Chalhua. We stop for lunch in front of the church with a view of the Contrahierbas 6000m.
After lunch we return to our private vehicle to go up the Portachuelo de Llanganuco pass 4767 m, we stop for photographs of the Huascarán, Huandoy, Pisco, Chacraraju, Chopicalqui mountain cirque. Descent towards the lagoons, Yungay and Carhuaz.
